Name: Isaac Taylor
Age: 19
Specialism: Arboriculture Apprentice
Location: Rotherham
1) What attracted you to join the Glendale apprenticeship scheme?
I was studying at college but being in a classroom constantly isn’t where I really wanted to be, I wanted to be out working while learning at the same time. The Glendale apprenticeship scheme was the perfect opportunity for me.
2) What practices does your role involve?
Every day can present different challenges, but I generally do things like chainsaw work, tree felling, pruning, chipping, planting and relocation – often working at a fast pace.
3) What are the advantages of having been assigned your own mentor?
It’s so helpful having someone on hand with so much experience and knowledge, who I can go to if I have any issues or need advice on a particular matter.
4) How has practical on the job training developed your skill set?
It’s all about being given a realistic idea of what to expect from the world of work. College is great but it’s more of a ‘here’s what you might do’ when you leave – whereas an apprenticeship gives you the hands on experience alongside the academic side of things, which is vital.
5) Describe your most rewarding experience/achievement on the scheme to date
Nothing in particular stands out, because I feel like every day I gain something new. I can go home at the end of a day at work and feel like I’ve contributed to the community. It’s also a good feeling if I’m out and about and see a stretch of land I’ve worked on, and be able to say ‘I did that.’ It can be a very rewarding feeling!
6) Do you have any ambitions to achieve with the company?
For now I just want to carry on working hard and gaining as much experience as I can with such a reputable national company like Glendale, and if there are any opportunities to develop further I will gladly take them.
