Glendale helps Bideford school children create their perfect garden

Glendale’s South West based landscaping team help transform a plot of unused land at a junior school in Bideford into a garden.

The national green service provider got involved through Mi-space who, working in partnership with their client Sanctuary Housing, were giving an overgrown area at West Croft Junior School a new lease of life.

The garden was designed by Mike Dennys, the senior estimator from Glendale.  He took inspiration from the school children who created drawings of how they wanted to the garden to look as part of a competition.  Mike judged the competition in partnership with a representative from Sanctuary Housing, selecting three winning entries; ideas from each went into his final design.

Volunteers from the company’s local teams cleared the overgrown site making way for 17 timber planters constructed by Mi-space which were planted with flowers, fruit and vegetables donated by Glendale and Glendale Horticulture.

The garden also featured a sensory area designed to stimulate all of the five senses, as well as bird boxes, a shed, a greenhouse and outdoor education areas.

Mike Dennys, comments: “I really enjoyed getting involved in this project and when I found out that it was a gardening club for a local primary school I fell in love with the idea.  At Glendale, we are always eager to support our local communities and this year, more than ever, we want to invest our time and energy into giving back as part of our 25th-anniversary celebrations.  This project was the perfect opportunity to do this.

“Once again the Glendale team did us proud as they worked well alongside the students and made a huge contribution to making the project a very enjoyable one.”

Glendale’s staff helped the pupils plant the planters using compost and mulch donated by Woodland Horticulture kick-starting the school’s gardening club.

Andrew Moore, senior project manager for Mi-space, added: “Investing in the communities in which we live and work is part of our company ethos; from local jobs and training opportunities to community benefit projects like this.

“Our supply chain partners are very supportive; special thanks go to Glendale and the other partners of this project; they’ve supported us to bring the pupils’ designs to life.
