Glendale gives community space a special makeover

A team from Glendale has breathed new life into a community space as part of celebrations marking the company’s 25th anniversary.

The Community 25 initiative saw tenants from one of Glendale’s housing clients, the Sutton Housing Partnership, invited to nominate a deserving resident to receive a free garden makeover to the value of £1,500.

But instead of selecting just one garden, tenants chose to put forward a communal space to be overhauled so that the improvements could benefit more residents.

A team of five specialists from Glendale’s estate management team carried out clearance work, before planting shrubs and seasonal bedding.

Nick Brooks, assistant regional director at Glendale, said: “We have been working with the Sutton Housing Partnership for many years and have built a strong relationship with the residents, so it’s been a joy to see the community come together.

“The residents have taken a really keen interest in the project, and it’s wonderful that a communal space was chosen, so people can get together and enjoy outdoor space.  Improving green spaces is always a priority for Glendale.”

Dennis Paul, head of external services at Sutton Housing Partnership, said: “We have a great partnership with Glendale and we;’re really grateful to have had the opportunity to work on this project.

“By helping to choose the planting scheme residents have been able to create a space they want and will use.  We hope this will leave a lasting landmark which residents will be proud to maintain and help look after.

“In particular, some of our older residents who got involved have told us they’re looking forward to taking up gardening as a new hobby.  This is exactly the kind of thing Sutton Housing Partnership encourages in local communities, research has shown that gardening can bring about some great health benefits, providing gentle exercise, and older people that garden are two and half times less likely to suffer serious long-term health problems.”

The Sutton Housing Partnership manages social housing across Sutton in Surrey, aiming to bring investment and improvements to homes.

Glendale has been delivering grounds maintenance support to Sutton Housing Partnership for ten years, including grass cutting and development work such as shrub beds and meadows.
