North Somerset Council asked national green service provider Glendale, to respond to a flood threat on Monday 21st November at a pond on Summer Lane in Weston-super-Mare.
The team responded quickly, distributing flood defence barriers, and supplying a telehandler to help the fire and rescue service dissipate the water from the pond.
David Buckley, contract manager at Glendale, said:“North Somerset Council asked us to undertake the distribution of flood defences as part of our service delivery in the district last year, and we’ve been undertaking flood defence training days in preparation for an event such as this.
“A key part of our contract is the flexibility built into it in order to enable our staff to respond rapidly to seasonal or weather-based occurrences where required by the council. My team volunteered to work beyond their normal hours on Monday night to ensure the situation was under control. We had the barriers in place by 8 pm and the staff finally stood down at 9 pm.”
Edward McKay, contract officer at North Somerset Council, said: “The barriers were put up just in time and did stop a number of residential properties from being flooded. It’s good to see that we can rely on our contractors to help in times of need and this has been very much noted and the council, emergency services and local residents thank everyone involved.”
