A team comprised of 14 apprentices and three staff from green services company Glendale has set sail from the Albert Dock in Liverpool to participate in The Apprentice Ship Cup.
The apprentices boarded the Pelican of London on June 8 on its voyage to Dublin, where they will be adopting the role of crew members and completing challenges to develop themselves as sailors.
The biggest tall ship regatta in the country, a fleet of six tall ships will carry between 300-400 young people as they take part in the race which has three stages: Liverpool to Dublin, Dublin to Glasgow and Glasgow to Liverpool.
To earn their place in the competition, the Glendale apprentices raised £10,000 for the organisers of the Cup, the Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust (MAST), by completing an Ironman triathlon.
MAST is a charity which works to enable young people to achieve growth and personal development through sailing training and activities.
Peter Cosgrove, general manager at Glendale Liverpool said: “Following the success of the 2014 event, the team was determined to earn its place in this years’ competition.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity as it emphasises the importance of core skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication. It also puts apprenticeships in the spotlight and the benefits they hold for young people and businesses.
“Last year was incredible, a truly a life-changing experience.”
An awards dinner will be held at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool on June 27 where the winners will be crowned. Glendale Liverpool won the award for best fundraisers.
